Best Biryani’s In Mangalore That Deserves Praises
I love biryani’s and am sure almost everybody else in Mangalore does too, I can’t recollect my first biryani experience but at the most I can remember the biryani at Pereira’s when I was a little kid, am sure if you have lived long enough in Mangalore you must know Pereira’s. Just an experiment why don’t you guys try remembering your first biryani experience, give it some thought and you might just remember it. If not you must have had a memory span of a gold fish.
A good biryani must have every single rice grain separate from one another, it must be fluffy and soft. Must have spices like cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and bay leaf to enhance the flavour of the rice. Definitely must use fresh ingredients than using a readymade biryani spice mixes, and last but not the least must be made with ghee, there is no good biryani made with vegetable oil.
This list is based on countless restaurants experiences with family and friends and huge number of arguments won, to choose only these specific restaurants. We also kept in mind the biryani uniqueness, quantity, price and taste. Please feel free to give your suggestion if we have missed out on any.
*Please Note: This list is in descending order of rank.
10) Thalassery kaada (quail) biryani at thalaserry kitchen
Thalasserry kitchen is located in Bunder area, near Bombay lucky restaurant. We never heard about this restaurant from anyone we know, but stumbled upon as I was passing by. Thalassery style biryani with quail meat. Quail meat dry fried tastes absolutely good along with Thalasserry style biryani, the meat was good and a better alternative to chicken meat. Kaada biryani was priced at 150 rs here, and the ambience was average. It’s better to check it out in the evenings after 6. They have many other biryani options but I liked this one. There are many restaurants in Mangalore that serve good thalassery biryani but this one was better because of the kaada (quail).
P.s: I had never eaten quail before.
9) Chicken 65 Biriyani, Parika
Parika restaurant located near Marnamikatte circle, is known for its taste and quantity. This was the best biryani out of the plenty others at parika. It’s pretty unusual to have chicken 65 masala in a biryani, the boneless chicken pieces being coated with chicken 65 masala. It’s priced at 200 Rs, the ambience is alright, clean and has a small seating capacity.
When it comes to the quantity of the biryani, it’s overwhelming, able to serve at least 3 members.
8) Bhatkali biryani at Oota da Mane
Oota da Mane located at Nalapad residency at light house hill road, near Tagore Park. Bhatkali biryani at Oota da mane is an authentic bhatkali style biryani at least that’s what they told us. They also said What makes them stand out from the other bhatkali biryanis in Mangalore is the way they prepare it, The masala used for the biryani is cooked in slow fire for about 6 hours. By doing this the onions will be caramelised making the biryani not spicy but rather sweetish. Nevertheless, we loved the biryani and it is very distinctive in taste.
Has an overall good ambience and the biryani costs around 120 Rs, Sounds like a damn good deal.
7) Matka biryani at Diner’s Paradise, Kadri & at Mughlai kitchen, Valencia
Diner’s Paradise and Mughlai kitchen both serve this amazing biryani called as Matka biryani. Diner’s paradise is located at in front of city hospital, Kadri and Mughlai kitchen is opposite to Fathima Retreat centre in Valencia. The price of the biryani is 250 Rs, not a bad deal for quality and quantity.
In terms of the ambience and value for money I would prefer Mughlai kitchen. Mughlai Kitchen makes it spicy and Diner’s paradise prefers it all balanced. Among so many restaurants that I have been to, I have noticed that this particular biryani takes longer time to prepare. The best part about this particular biryani is that, they cook or steam the whole biryani in a pot. And I love steamed biryani, it has lots flavour which is more vibrant as it is mixed with the rice and chicken, the aroma is powerful as its been confined in the pot.
- Chicken tikka Biryani, Coconut Grove
Coconut grove is located near Colaco hospital, lower bendoor. The place has decent, neat ambience even though it’s a bar and restaurant. The chicken tikka biryani here is priced at 250 Rs.
Chicken tikka biryani is now available at most of the restaurants in Mangalore. The credits to the first ever chicken tikka biryani in Mangalore would undisputedly go to Danish.
I liked theirs, but the one at coconut grove is the best. Spicy soft cut boneless pieces not very charcoaly flavoured nor having any burnt coating, these pieces of chicken were perfect and juicy and I couldn’t get enough of it. Yes it is a bit spicy but the spiciness isn’t overpowering the other flavours of the biryani.
5) Chicken Keema Biryani, Mangala.
Mangala restaurant in Valencia, near Fatima retreat centre. Love the ambience here, this restaurant has been running for a long time. And yeah I do have many memories here which also makes me like this place more.
Keema rice is available in many places in Mangalore, like froth, LL, Aquarius etc. And it’s is usually made with brown masala, except for in Mangala it’s served with this yum red masala.
The keema biriyani is priced at 200 Rs which is fairly reasonable taking into consideration the taste, quality and feel of the place,
4) Lucknowi Biriyani, Pind
Pind located at mischief mega mall, Ks Rao Road. Amazing ambience and service comes along with the pricey place I guess. The lucknowi biryani costs Rs 365, and yeah it’s definitely worth it, even though they have many other must try items, do try this biryani.
Lucknow is famous for its traditionally made gravy with desi ghee and fragrance of kevda with addition of dry fruits. Well it’s one of those biryani experiences where we spoke less and ate more of this mouth-watering biryani. Also love the guy who greets sat sri akal at the entrance, you can’t miss him.
3) Kozi chicken biryani, Khasak
Khasak located at Martin pais road, Lalbagh. Kozi chicken biryani Is priced at 650 Rs.
Khasak has really good ambience. You can say it’s worth it, as it’s outdoors and every table has its own chamber and it’s all situated ideally, this great ambience also adds as an extra bonus to the food experience making it the most memorable. Kozi chicken biryani is huge and can serve up to 4 really hungry people otherwise to 6 if you have friends like mine. Small cut rice which is most common in Kerala biryanis is used which covers whole dry fried chicken having a very unique taste experience when it’s hot. This was a great experience for us and made memorable by this huge gigantic biryani.
In this Picture my expressions said it all 😀
2) Mutton Dum Biryani, Royal Darbar
Mutton dum biryani is available everywhere but imagine for a second, if a needle has to stand out in a bundle of needles it must show something unique. And that uniqueness was by the biryani quality and the tender soft mutton pieces. It was the best made dum biryani I had tasted even though I never liked mutton it’s definitely one of those biryani which haunts you through its explicit aroma in your hands for days, truly a biryani which is hard to forget. The service and the ambience along with the biryani made me feel Royal as I ate it.
- Andhra House Special Biryani at Andhra House, Bejai
This has been my all-time favourite place in Mangalore. I love their starters like Andhra house special chicken, leg roast, chicken wings and even their special Andhra style meals with so many varieties on the plate( they prefer serving on banana leaf). They have leg roast biryani, kheema biryani, chicken wings or dry fry biryani, mutton biryani, chicken dum biryani and the Andhra house special biryani. Andhra house special biryani is my favourite and the undisputed best biryani in the entire Mangalore city. Small boneless pieces of chicken with the spicy Andhra masala on top of the biryani. I have taken many of my friends here, since I came to know about this place and they have all loved it. The ambience isn’t lovely but it’s worth it with the food available here.
It’s my absolute pleasure to write about these places.
When we find something we love a lot, to cherish it we often make one mistake and that is making it our habit or a common routine. Many people make that mistake, don’t be one of them. Have something special to make your day awesome rather than follow the same common routine, and remember to eat your food quickly or you might have to share it if you have some amazing friends like mine!
Stay tuned for more updates until then stay healthy stay fit and more importantly stay hungry!
